Virtual Author Talks for High Poverty Schools
Supporting Reading and Literacy for All Communities

What is the Buy One Give One Program?

BookBreak’s Buy One Give One Program allows us to give a high-poverty school free access to our virtual author talk program. We bring monthly bestselling virtual author talks to our network of schools each month via live stream, including Q&A from students. The events are geared toward specific grade cohorts from K-12, and are accompanied by lesson plans and activities that integrate into the curriculum. Each grade level has the opportunity to hear from an age-appropriate author at least once per month. Recordings of the talks are also available for future use.

Our vision is to make hearing from inspiring authors a regular part of the student experience and dramatically expand access to these programs. BookBreak is committed to supporting reading and literacy for all students K-12.

We received really positive feedback from schools in this program.

Here are a few examples of how BookBreak’s Buy One Give One program impacted high poverty schools…

“Students have been excited to check out and read books that might otherwise not have. All of 4th grade enjoyed Ben Yokohama and the Cookie of Doom in preparation for the book talk with Matt Swanson. Our 4th grade students all gathered together to draw with Jeff Kinney! Many were inspired to consider pursuing careers as illustrators. Students in 1st grade wrote their own poetry after watching a recording of Liz Garton Scanlon's talk”

“Without BookBreak my students would not have had the opportunity to "meet" so many of today's extraordinary authors and learn all about their amazing books! Having access to BookBreak provided me with a unique tool to help inspire my students not only to read but to write and draw as well. (the draw-along sessions were a big hit!) It also prompted my students to try out different genres of books. All in all, BookBreak was a huge success here at Dean Highland Elementary. Thank you SO much for your generosity!”

“Our older students REALLY enjoyed drawing alongside Jeff Kinney! Definitely the interactive portion of the interview was what the students enjoyed the most. I think the length was perfect- more than 15 minutes would have been too long. For our younger students, I really enjoyed sharing and teaching each book during my storytimes, and these lessons were not necessarily ones that I would have picked, so I'm grateful for the story/lesson ideas as well! You all really picked some wonderful books and authors to share with our young readers! Thank you! :)”
