The latest NAEP data reveals a dramatic reversal in student habits: since 2004, the number of 13-year-olds who "hardly ever" read for fun has nearly doubled, while the percentage of regular readers has plummeted from 64% to just 36%. The joy of reading starts to drain away in elementary school and hits a crisis point by the time students reach middle and high school.
